ACTIVITY EXAMPLES
Infant (0-12 months)
Tummy Time Painting can help infants discover different textures and colors. (Science and Art ) It also help stimulate and motivate them to move. My five month old daughter tried to crawl/wiggle to create her first masterpiece. It also promotes socialization. Both babies noticed each other and communicated as they painted.
Pre-Toddler (1 years old)
Huge part of STEAM with one-year-olds is using tools to begin to manipulate the world around them. (Technology) The ice mountain activity allows students the to use tools to melt ice to get various objects out of the ice. (Science) The students have to problem solve and see what tools will work the best. The child is also looking at the different tools and trying to figure out which tool is best.
Toddler (2 years old)
Mirror Painting can help toddlers develop an understanding of color mixtures (Science), develop and use different tools to create desired stroke styles (Technology), and the beginning stages of representing figures with shapes (Art).
Engineering bubble wands can help toddlers manipulate and create tools to complete a task (Technology) and discover what effect changes to the size and shape of the bubble wand has on the resulting bubble (Science).
Pre-School (3-5 years old)
The ice mountain can be an activity for all ages. These pictures focus on the pre-school students. They have to use different tools to figure out how to break down the ice. As they break down the ice they are trying to find the hidden treasure. After they figure out how to breakdown and melt the ice students have to sort the treasure.
